Docent Naturalist Apprenticeship Program

Is your enthusiasm for the outdoors contagious? Are you passionate about nature? If so, join our Docent Naturalist Training Program and become part of a stellar group of individuals who volunteer their time and skills by leading guided nature walks at Adkins Arboretum. By the end of the program, you’ll have confidence in your ability to engage an audience in the Arboretum’s mission as you share your love of nature.

Indoor and outdoor activities are planned for each class, with an emphasis on learning by doing…outside. In addition to classes, participants are required to attend a monthly guided walk at the Arboretum, with the eventual goal of leading walks on their own.

The 2022 program will meet on second Thursdays from 10 a.m. to noon (2/10, 3/10, 4/14, 5/12, 6/9, 7/14, 9/8, 10/13, 11/10, 12/8). Training is free; volunteer service is required outside of class time.

To apply for a spot, send email to Jenny Houghton or call Jenny at 410-634-2847, ext. 23. A background in nature studies is a prerequisite for this program. Examples include Master Naturalist or Master Gardening training, nature-based coursework, or simply a lifelong pursuit of knowledge about the natural world.
