Trees of the Chesapeake
Can you tell your sweetgums from your maples? How about your ironwoods from your oaks? Students will delve into photosynthesis and native tree identification by using hand lenses to observe leaves, then join their classmates in a “build a tree” activity. Afterwards, they’ll explore the Arboretum’s woodland paths with a docent naturalist to uncover dynamic relationships between native trees, animals, and people. A visit to the Arboretum’s wigwams and model shelter building will reinforce the ongoing connection between people and trees. (NGSS 1-LS1-1).
