Adkins Arboretum is operated by the not-for-profit Adkins Arboretum, Ltd. under a 50-year lease with the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. It is the generosity of private individuals that provides financial support for the staffing, maintenance, programming and development of the Arboretum.

Adkins Arboretum was founded in 1980 with the help of a donation from Leon Andrus, a resident of Queen Anne's County. To honor Andrus's vision of promoting the appreciation and conservation of native plants on the Delmarva Peninsula, the Leon Andrus Society was established in 2004. The Society welcomes members who join the Arboretum or renew their annual memberships at the $1,000 level or above.
