FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (RIDGELY, MD—JANUARY 30, 2007)

ADKINS ARBORETUM OFFERS SOUP ’N WALK PROGRAM: NATURE, NURTURE AND NUTRITION

To feed the mind and nurture the body, Adkins Arboretum is offering a series of Soup ’n Walk programs. Each program includes a guided walk that focuses on the natural beauty found in the Arboretum woods. Following the walk, participants enjoy a delicious and healthy lunch and learn about the nutritional value of the meal from nutritionist and Arboretum docent Julianna Pax.

Each walk is themed and is led by a docent naturalist. The first walk, scheduled for Saturday, February 16, is titled Discover the Greens in the Winter Woods and will feature evergreen plants, ferns, moss and cranefly orchid. The lunch menu includes sweet potato, corn and kale chowder; avocado and pink grapefruit salad; pumpernickel bread; spinach dip; and chocolate brownies with orange glaze. Future Soup ’n Walk programs will feature buds and early spring blooms on March 15, ephemerals and tree blossoms on April 26, white and pink flowers at creekside on May 17, and cool summer blooms on June 21. Each nutrition talk and menu will focus on the vegetables, fruits, beans, whole grains and fats recommended for a healthy diet. Copies of recipes are provided.

The Soup ’n Walk program begins at 11 a.m. The cost is $18 for Arboretum members and $20 for the general public. Pre-registration is required. For more information or to register, call 410-634-2847, extension 0.

Adkins Arboretum is a 400-acre native garden and preserve at the headwaters of the Tuckahoe Creek in Caroline County. Open year round, the Arboretum offers educational programs for all ages about nature and gardening. Through its Campaign to Build a Green Legacy, the Arboretum will build a new LEED-certified Arboretum Center and entranceway to broaden educational offerings and research initiatives promoting best practices in conservation and land stewardship.
