An Arboretum Valentine
February 11 and 12
Get ready for Valentine’s Day at the Arboretum! Nature is
full of heart shapes, and we’ll explore the woods to find
natural valentines. Then it’s back to the classroom to make
leafy heart crafts, read Valentine stories, and munch on heart-shaped
snacks.
Groundhogs Galore
February 18 and 19
Let’s learn about Mr. Groundhog and his predictions for the
arrival of spring. We will look for Arboretum groundhog homes,
make groundhog puppets, and sing a special groundhog song.
Terrific Tracks
February 25 and 26
Which animals are out and about in the cold? Become an expert tracker
and find out! We’ll learn to identify the tracks of various
animals and make our own tracks through the woods. Return to the
classroom to warm up with hot chocolate and winter animal stories.
Happy Birthday, Mr. Tree!
March 3 and 4
Learn how to tell a tree’s age by examining its annual rings.
We will make “tree cookie” necklaces, read tree stories,
and look in the forest for a tree to hug!
Sproutin’ Seeds
March 10 and 11
It’s time to start thinking about your summer garden! Learn
how seeds germinate and start your own seeds in a nifty egg carton
tray. Then visit the Arboretum greenhouse and enjoy a picnic snack.
Let’s Go Fly a Kite
March 17 and 18
Celebrate blustery March with a lesson on wind, and then make a
kite and enjoy the wind’s uplifting power! We will fly our
kites in the meadow and read windy poems during snacktime.
Dirt Detectives
March 24 and 25
Just what’s so special about soil? Find out as we conduct
our very own soil search and make glittery “soil” shakers
to remind us that there’s more to dirt than meets the eye.
Spring Color
March 31 and April 1
Spring is here, and we’ll celebrate by dyeing eggs…the
natural way! Learn about making dyes from plants, look for dye-producing
plants in the woods, and experiment with natural dyes on eggs you’ve
brought from home.
Adkins Arboretum is a 400-acre native garden and preserve at the
