Dear Members and Friends,

Look up the word "arboretum" and you might find this definition: a botanical garden devoted to trees. This is a passive definition, and Adkins Arboretum is anything but passive. Adkins is a living, breathing arboretum that welcomes thousands of gardeners, birders, students, scouts, artists, hikers, dog walkers, and naturalists each year.

There are as many ways to experience Adkins as there are seeds in a milkweed pod. A painter captures fall color along the Blockston Branch with thick oil paints. Kindergartners hold a wetland tadpole for the first time while engaging in an environmental education program. The audience sits entranced as Shakespeare is recited from a meadow stage.

What does it take to provide such multifaceted, rich encounters with nature? Consider a Canada goose gliding through the water. Seen from above, all is calm, effortless. Beneath the water, webbed feet paddle furiously. The staff of Adkins Arboretum is committed to doing everything it takes to preserve the Arboretum's 400 acres of native meadow, wetland, stream, and forest habitats for the education and enjoyment of nature lovers now and in the future. We need your help and commitment, too.

Please give the gift of nature this year by contributing to Adkins Arboretum. Just as a single tree doesn't make a forest, it's only through the generosity of many supporters that the Arboretum can grow and thrive.

Sincerely,

Will Cook
