Adkins Arboretum is sponsoring its 2008 Art Competition. The theme of this year’s competition celebrates the Arboretum’s conservation mission, Discover the Wild Landscapes of the Coastal Plain. The Leon Andrus Award will be given to first and second place winners in honor of the Arboretum’s first benefactor.

Open to all original two- and three-dimensional fine arts. The show will be juried by digital images and slides. The deadline for submissions is January 9, 2008. Digital images can be sent by E-mail ; slides or CDs should be accompanied with a SASE. Include title, medium, and dimensions (maximum 6 ft. in any dimension, excluding outdoor sculpture). Artists may submit up to three images. Images that do not reflect the show’s theme will not be juried.

The artists of work selected will be contacted by January 22 to submit the original art ready to hang by February 6. Framing should be simple and well constructed. Arrangements to install outdoor sculpture will be discussed with individual artists when their work is selected.

Maryland critic and curator Deborah McLeod will jury the show. There is no fee. Artists are responsible for shipping expenses. Adkins Arboretum reserves the right to refuse any work that does not match the original image juried or fails to meet the show’s guidelines. Selected artists may be considered for future exhibits at Adkins Arboretum.

Instructions for submitting images via E-mail:

  • send entries to .
  • include the artist's contact information and title, medium, and dimensions of work in the body of the E-mail
  • attach the digital images to the E-mail
  • attached files should not exceed 5MB in size

Instructions for submitting slides or images on CD via US Mail:

  • clearly label each image, indicating the top, artist’s contact information, title, medium, and dimensions of work
  • enclose a SASE
  • mail to Adkins Arboretum
